The BlueWave Beta Lab: GSM Network

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

It’s time for the first instalment of The BlueWave Beta Lab. In this feature, I’ll give you a look into some of the projects we’re working on that will be launched over the coming months and years. In this first edition I wanted to show you something that has future potential to unsettle both fixed and mobile incumbents.

We’ve spent the last few months building a GSM/GPRS network architecture (HLR/VLR/MSC/GGSN/SGSN/BSC) and we’re delighted to announce the first test calls and GPRS data sessions have been completed in Ballaugh using a single TRX tri-sectored base station (3 x cells).

ip.access Pico Cell
Description: ip.access model 139 GPRS pico cell

The technology has many applications. From large scale macro network deployments to replacement of DECT handsets within corporate environments, especially those with difficult coverage or multiple sites.

The beauty of using pico cells from ip.access is they use our native IP network for backhaul. This keeps backhaul costs low and enables rapid deployment without the need for expensive and impractical E1 circuits.

BlueWave SIM Card
Description: BlueWave SIM Card & Nokia 1208

The technology is limited to our labs at the moment, but subject to appropriate licensing and deployment partners, we hope it will be in commercial deployment late 2011.

That’s all for this first edition, I look forward to writing another early next year.

With best wishes,

Stuart Baggs

The Inevitable: We’re on Twitter

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

These days it seems just about everyone has a Twitter feed. For us we wanted more than just another avenue to publish the same old. So, whilst we will be using our twitter to link to this blog, advise on status updates, network upgrades etc, we’ll also be using it to let you know our latest projects and sneak peaks at what’s coming next!

Remember Twitter is a two way medium so get in touch and let us know your thoughts and suggestions etc.

The all important link, we are @BlueWaveIoM.
